Identity Theft Protection
Identity theft can happen to anyone, in the course of a normal day, many people submit their personal and financial information to several other entities, here are some tips on safeguarding your identity and reducing your risk of identity theft.

Identity theft is usually defined as when a hacker or criminal steals your identity, including personal and financial information to commit a crime or fraud. Identity theft can happen to anyone and no one is immune to identity theft, however, you can protect yourself by implementing the following safeguards.

One of the ways you can safeguard your identity is to be careful how you share it online.  Identity theft can happen very easily online, because your information can be inadvertently given to a fraudulent entity or hacked easily from your computer, for this reason, you should make sure that the passwords that you use are secure and that any personal information or financial information that you send to another entity is encrypted and goes to the rightful party.

Secure Your Password
Passwords can usually be hacked very easily and your information from databases can be stolen. When choosing a password make sure that they include both numbers and letters. Some passwords are case sensitive which means you can add a capital letter to the mix for added security. It is also a good idea to make your password at least 8 digits in length.

Beware of Email and Phishing Scams
One of the ways that hackers and criminals will try to acquire your personal information is to make believe they are legitimate companies such as credit card companies, Paypal, Ebay, etc and ask you to click on a link enclosed in an email which will then ask you for your information.  Never click on a link in an email.  If you think the request for information is legitimate, close your email and browser, open up a new browser window and visit the web site directly.

Check Your Credit Reports
It is important to check your credit report each year or even every six months.  Your credit report will advise you on what new credit cards were opened and were loans were taken out.  You can easily see if any accounts were opened without your permission or frauduently and then contact the authorities to stop the fraud or theft.

Following the many tips above will help you reduce the chances that identity theft will strike you.  However, since there is no fail safe way to protect yourself against identity theft and fraud, it is extremely important to be alert and vigilant.
